image of millions of galaxies

The God of all Creation is right here, right now.

Recently, I came across the above image of what I thought was part of the night sky. It turns out that what I was looking at was a very small part of the universe. Indeed, the picture captures millions of galaxies, not unlike our very own Milky Way. It is believed that there are billions of galaxies in the universe. That's right - BILLIONS! I was suddenly gripped with an innate sense of awe and wonder which created something of a cognitive dissonance; I was faced, at the same time, by the wonder of God's immensity as well as a stark reminder of our  diminutiveness. My thoughts immediately turned to Colossians 1:15-16, which reads,

'15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together' - Colossians 1:16 ESV

Herein lies the wonder: the very God who spoke these galaxies into being chose to come to our little part of one of those galaxies as one of us! I don't know about you, but to me, it speaks both of the matchlessness of Almighty God and the limitless expansiveness of His love for each of us.

To me, what makes this so remarkable is that, in the grand scheme of things, we really don't matter. Yet clearly, to the One who is greater than everything, we matter so very much indeed. The evidence speaks for itself, after all.

You see, the multi-fold miracle of His love is reflected in the fact that the same voice that uttered these wonders into being is the very same voice that has spoken your name. Yes, YOUR name.

It is the same voice that whispers,

'But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.' - Isaiah 43:1 (ESV)

It is the same voice that exclaims,

'I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name.' - Isaiah 45:3 (ESV)

He knows YOU by name! He calls YOU by name! Being small is not the same as being insignificant. You matter because you matter to Him.

Take a moment today to ponder that wonderful reality. Pause and quiet your heart as you listen for His gentle whisper calling your name. The One who called creation into being is the One who calls to you - right here, right now.

It doesn't matter how alone we may feel, we clearly can never be alone when we are constantly in the presence of the God who is constantly everywhere present. Right here, right now.

I would like to invite you into a moment of stillness. You may want to close your eyes. Pause for a minute or two, and as you do, gently whisper His name. Become aware of His presence with you. Remind yourself that you are standing in the midst of the everywhere-present God. Right here, right now. As you speak His name, be reminded that His voice still speaks, and it speaks your name.

Prayer

Lord, in this moment of stillness, regardless of what I am going through, I choose to lift my eyes and gaze to the heavens. As I do, may I remember that You made them. Yet, in this moment, would You also help me to remember Your invitation for me to listen for Your gentle whisper through the day. Remind me, Lord, to take moments to pause in Your presence, to accept that You are always right here, right now. I can rest in this moment in Your loving arms. I can look up and remember Your vastness. Yet I can also remember that, despite my smallness, I am not insignificant because I am loved by the One who made it all. Thank You Lord for loving me. Thank You knowing my name. Thank You for being right here, right now.

Amen.
